The Truth About "No Posing" and Why Candid Photography Isn't Always What It Seems

Client Experience

When you hear the term "candid photography," you might picture a beautiful, unscripted moment—your family laughing together naturally, a child smiling as they play, or a couple sharing a quiet, intimate glance. It's easy to assume that candid moments are spontaneous and happen without any planning. But here's the truth: candid moments rarely happen on their own in portrait photography. In documentary photography, absolutely! It's candid moments galore! You're capturing real-time moments that happen naturally because you're documenting an event or activity, where the subjects are often focused on the reason they are there which is not photography. But in family portraits, it’s a different story—those candid moments require some guidance.

Let’s break it down.

The Challenge of Candid in Family Portraits

When clients book a session, they’re often stepping outside their comfort zone. They’re nervous, unsure of what to do, and, in many cases, not feeling at their most relaxed. For instance, imagine this scenario: I show up to a session, camera in hand, and tell my clients, “Just do you!” while standing there quietly with my camera in front of their faces. Sounds like a recipe for disaster, right?

In this situation, I’m pretty sure the only candid moment that would occur would be one of genuine awkwardness.

While many people think that candid moments are the best way to capture the true essence of who they are, it’s just not that simple. Without guidance, it’s unlikely that you’ll get those beautiful, natural moments at a family photoshoot. Instead, you risk capturing awkwardness and uncertainty. People might feel lost, not knowing how to interact or what to do with their bodies. In those moments, real connection and genuine expressions become harder to achieve.

Guidance: The Key to Genuine Connection

When people come to a photoshoot, they often don’t know what to expect, and that nervousness can quickly lead to uncertainty. The truth is, what my clients really want is not just to be left alone and told to “be themselves.” What they truly need is guidance.

I guide my clients into relaxed, authentic moments by helping them feel comfortable and confident. My job as a professional photographer is to make sure that they feel at ease so they can interact naturally, not worry about awkward poses or looking stiff. Sure, I give them space to be themselves, but I also guide them through their session by positioning them in beautiful light, ensuring the composition is pleasing, and even helping them figure out what to do with their hands!

I’ll direct them to turn toward each other, hold hands, or give a big hug. I’ll offer suggestions like, "slow dance and really soak in each other's presence" or "Can you swing your little one in the air?" or "let's play red light green light!" These moments of guidance allow the magic to unfold naturally, leading to those real emotions, candid smiles, and genuine interactions that clients love.

Creating Real Candid Moments Through Connection

People sometimes think they want pure candid shots. But, deep down, they want those fleeting moments of connection captured. They want their family’s love, their children’s laughter, and the closeness they share to be captured in a way that feels real, not forced.

The goal is to create the right environment for candid moments to emerge. That is why I tell my clients to think of my sessions as quality time spent with loved ones and not a photoshoot. When my clients trust me and feel guided, that’s when the laughter, smiles, and authentic connections happen. They’re comfortable because they’re not stressed about posing or unsure of what to do. They’re free to interact and enjoy the moment, and I’m there to document it beautifully.

So, while documentary-style photography can work for certain events or activities, when it comes to family portraits, posing and guidance are essential. My job is to create a space where my clients feel comfortable being themselves so that I can capture the genuine, beautiful moments that matter most.

In the end, candid photography is not about stepping back and hoping for a lucky shot. It’s about creating the environment for authentic connections to unfold and having the right direction to capture those moments that will be cherished for a lifetime.

And that’s where the magic happens.
